While services like EasyNews let you view Usenet in your web browser it’s true power comes to life when you have the proper NNTP software. On this page I list the best free Usenet software. Most of it has to do with downloading binary (porn) files from the newsgroups.
QuadSucker
QuadSucker/News can download FOUR pictures at the same time! If you want to grab all the porn on Usenet this is the tool you need. Quadnews features a very powerful multipart message assembly algorithm ensuring that multipart messages are assembled correctly. This is the tool of choice for downloading music files (MP3, WAV, etc), applications (ZIP, RAR, etc), and of course images (GIF, JPEG, PCX, etc).
One of the powerful features of this software is the ability to setup BLACKLIST and WHITELIST filters. I’ve eliminated at least 98% of the crap using the blacklist! This program also has a good duplicate file checker that works to now download the same file twice.
If you’re using the free XSNews service you will be limited to only 2 files at a time and speed will be limited. You will need one of the premium Usenet providers to get max speed and all 4 downloads going at once.
Windows version 95, 98, ME, NT, 2000, XP, Vista, and Windows 7. Shareware (This is 100% fully functioning software! A 15 second nag screen at start-up is the only limitation.)
XanaNews
For years I have used the Forte Agent news reader but it is not free. While doing research for this site I came across XanaNews which is an awesome FREE newsreader. It handles binaries well as you can see in the screenshot. It will handle as many threads as your news server can throw at it. (Be sure to limit the threads to 2 or 1 if you are using a free server.) I’ve tried many free news readers from WinVn to Grabit and none come even close to XanaNews.

DupDetector
DupDetector is a utility for finding and removing duplicate and near duplicate images from your image collections. Pictures are often reposted to Usenet. This nifty utility will not only find all the duplicates but will automatically delete the low quality copies. While this is not specifically Usenet software it is a necessity for anyone running QuadSucker.
Supports 10 image file formats (jpg, gif, bmp, png, tif, pcx, tga, wmf, emf, psp).

Binreader UZB Downloader
Binreader is a simple, secure and free NZB downloader, providing user-friendly interface and all the options the majority of users require. This easy to use Usenet client allows you to preview files while downloading. Newsbin supports SSL encryption and will work with any Usenet provider. Simply open an NZB file and let Binreader do the rest. If you’re using the a free Usenet service be sure and set the connetions to 1 or 2, if you have a premium service you can crank them up.
